Current status of the construction work of Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory

Suto, Masahiro; Mikake, Shinichiro; Ikeda, Koki; Yamamoto, Masaru

no journal, ,

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)'s task is to provide the scientific and technical basis for safe geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. This involves researches on development and improvement of techniques for characterization of the deep geological environment and a wide range of engineering for deep underground application in crystalline rock at "Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU)". MIU is currently being constructed. The Main and Ventilation Shafts had reached GL-500m. This report describes the current status of the construction Work.

Research on geosphere stability for long-term isolation of radioactive waste; On the effect of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake

Niwa, Masakazu

no journal, ,

Groundwater levels are continuously logged in multiple boreholes, for understanding the regional groundwater flow around the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) site. Soon after the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake, groundwater level changes were observed in the almost boreholes. All boreholes arranged away from the MIU (approximately 1 to 5 km) showed drawdown ranging from several tens centimeters to several meters. The drawdown is consistent with the volumetric strain changes associated with the Tohoku earthquake based on the calculation using the program Coulomb 3.0. In contrast, groundwater levels were elevated up to 15 m in the boreholes localized in the vicinity of the MIU (within 600 m). Both disturbance due to the shaft excavation and local hydrogeological background in and around the MIU site can be major triggers of the elevation.

Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project; Contract research of long-term behavior in rock mechanics

Tanno, Takeo; Hikima, Ryoichi; Sanada, Hiroyuki; Matsui, Hiroya; Sato, Toshinori

no journal, ,

The phenomenological and theoretical studies on the rock for the evaluation of long-term behavior have been advanced in the rock mechanics in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory. On the phenomenological study, the consitituive equation for the long-term behavior was suggested and the suggested constitutive equation has been examined. As a result on the rock behavior of the laboratory experiment, the constitutive equation was shown to be benefit for the long-term behavior of the rock. On the theoretical study, the equation of pressure solution of quartz was suggested and the suggested equation was examined. As a result the equation was shown benefit for the pressure solution of the quartz.

no journal, ,

On the rock mechanics in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project, in the MIU the studies of the establishment of in-situ rock stress measurement, the development of the rock mechanical model and the establish of the modeling and the analytical technique have been advanced. On the establishment of in-situ rock stress measurement DSCA method turned out to be a effective measurement. On the development of the rock mechanical model the properties of the intact of Toki granite cloud be obtained by the surface-based investigation. On the establish of the modeling and the analytical technique a negative correlation between the rock mass classification and the equivalent stiffness of rock mass was found.

In this paper, a part of the result of long-term monitoring, hydrogeological modeling and groundwater flow simulation in Phase 2 of MIU project were introduced. And, applicability of model calibration methodology based on the data of hydraulic impacts in Phase 2 was confirmed by groundwater flow modeling using Phase 2 data.
